Listen to the thoughts

When I meditate, I often-times get to the stage where I can’t quite concentrate on one process (my breathing, for example) but yet I do have an awareness of the thoughts that buzz through my head.  It is interesting when I can actually count the thoughts; they are not so numerous as to totally escape my detection.  Sometimes I feel like this is good enough, at least in this stage.  I wonder whether I actually am getting a handle of my stream of consciousness during these moments, or if this too is an illusion.
